LPG shortage woes in TN set to end!

Chennai:
LPG consumers in Tamil Nadu can now heave a sigh of relief as the new LPG handling facility commissioned in Ennore Port on Wednesday will ensure uninterrupted supply of the gas to the State.
Speaking after commissioning of LPG operations at the Marine Liquid Terminal installed by Ennore Tank Terminals, the licensee of Marine Liquid Terminal at Ennore Port, Union Shipping Minister G K Vasan said that the total demand of LPG in Tamil Nadu is 1,32,000 tonnes per month as against the indigenous availability of 32,000 per month.
“So far, the gap has been met through imports at Mangalore and Visakhapatnam and by further road transportation from these cities to Chennai. The new facility, set up at a cost of Rs 167 crore at Ennore, will help to ensure uninterrupted supply of LPG to Tamil Nadu. Moreover, the new LPG handling facility at the Ennore Port has circumvented hazardous and long road transportation,” the Minister said.
It is believed that the facility will have the capacity to supply nearly 1,00,000 tonnes per month, Port officials said.
The Marine Liquid Terminal, that was developed at an investment of Rs 250 crore, has been in operation since January 2009. The laying of the LPG pipeline and mechanical unloading facilities in the port were recently completed  at an investment of Rs 82 crore. An additional storage capacity of 1.24 lakh kl for various petroleum oil lubricants and chemicals, at an investment of Rs 85 crore, has  also been installed by the Ennore Tank Terminal Private Limited.
The total cost of the additional storage facility and the LPG handling facility is Rs 167 crore. The overall investment in the Marine Liquid Terminal Project stands at Rs 417 crore.
Vasan added that the Capital Dredging Phase II project executed by the Dredging Corporation of India to create necessary depths to handle larger vessels was in progress at an estimated cost of Rs 170 crore and was expected to be completed by March 2013. Under this project, the Ennore Port’s channel depth has already been increased from 16 to 18 metres.
