Jaya to inaugurate Nemelli desalination plant


Chennai:
Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa will inaugurate the 100 MLD desalination plant once the work is completed, according to Municipal Administration and Rural Development Minister K P Munnusamy.

Speaking after reviewing works at the desalination plant here on Monday, the minister said that laying of 64.37 km pipeline has been completed. He also said the pumping station at Nemelli, Akarai, Tiruvanmiyur and Velachery with a combined capacity of 1,375 HP has also been completed.

Although, he did not give the exact time when the work will be finished but Metro Water sources said that more than 90 per cent work is completed except some minor works and the plant is go on stream soon.

The project to be set up with financial assistance from the Union government, will be the second desalination plant in Chennai. About 265 MLD of raw water from sea will be drawn by gravity by laying 1600 mm pipes for a length of 1042 metre and after undergoing reverse osmosis, 100 MLD desalinated water would be produced.

V A Tech Wabag Limited in consortium with IDE Technologies in Israel were awarded the contract for building the plant. The contract for laying drinking water pipeline and tanks is being awarded to Larsen and Toubro.
