National Coastal Movement has urged
Tamil Nadu government to recognize fisherwomen as workers and provide them with
fisheries department identification card and enlist them as members of fisher
welfare board.
Speaking at a seminar to mark
International Rural Women’s Day here on Friday, Valli
Gopal, secretary of the Siga Community Service Guild, Forum for Securing
Land and Livelihood Rights
Virgil D Swamy and National Coastal Movement Chamundeeswari also highlighted
the need to provide fisherwomen with compensation during non-fishing.
The women speakers also highlighted
that the government turns a blind eye towards the needs of women during
disaster. “It is only the men who get compensation,” they rued.
A resolution which was passed by
National Coastal Movement also stressed the need for an insurance package of Rs
one lakh for coastal women meeting with fatal accident and proper compensation
for loss of limbs.
It also suggested pension scheme to
be enforced for all single women workers without having any age limit and for
all fisher women from the age of 55.
