Madras Atomic Power Station
withstood the fury of Cyclone Nilam as both the reactors are functioning and
will continue to operate, according to Dr M Sai Baba, associate director,
Resources Management group, Indira Gandhi Centre for Atomic Research,
Kalpakkam.
Speaking to Express after the
cyclone hit the Chennai coast on Wednesday, he said both the reactors besides a
test reactor are functioning as usual and will continue to operate.
Earlier Station director of MAPS K
Ramamurthy said that Kalpakkam being a coastal site all the structures and
equipments were designed to withstand the wind velocity of 160 km per hour.
“If the cyclone intensifies, problem
may hardly arise with the transmission towers,” he said.
Saibaba told Express that a cyclone
protection committee was formed to take stock of the situation in the plant and
the township.
Meanwhile,
there has been a change of guard in Madras Atomic Power Station. T J
Kotteeswaran, who is the station director of Kaiga Generating Station – 3 and
4, Karnataka will take over the charge of Station director, MAPS from K
Ramamurthy, a release said.
