JICA likely to fund Peripheral Ring Road, Intelligent Transport System in Tamil Nadu

Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) is likely to fund estimated Rs 1,420 crore  Peripheral Ring Road connecting Mahabalipuram to Ennore and the Intelligent Transport system, according to highly placed sources in the Highways department.

Speaking on the sidelines of the Suminfra, an event organized by Confederation of Indian Industry along with the Tamil Nadu and Kerala governments, Principal secretary, Highways and Minor Ports Rajeev Ranjan said that JICA has expressed interest for funding the 162 km Peripheral Ring Road .

The Detailed Project Report is likely to be taken up soon. The project will run through Singaperumalkoil, Sriperumbudur, Tiruvallur, Thamaraipakkam, Periyapalayam and Puduvayal. Sources said  83.2 km of the 162-km stretch will be new formations.

Sources said that JICA showed keen interest towards the project during the visit of JICA’s expert team to the city on August. The team was here to discuss the status of Tamil nadu Investment Promotion Programme.

Sources told Express that 17 projects are being identified under the TNIPP programme. And works on some have already started.

Sources said that Chennai is on the radar of Japan International Cooperation Agency to develop and implement Intelligent Transport System to relieve congestion and improve safety in the roads. The main objective of ITS is to evaluate, develop, analyse and integrate new sensor, information, and communication technologies and concepts to achieve traffic efficiency, improve environmental quality, save energy, conserve time, and enhance safety and comfort for drivers, pedestrians, and other traffic groups.
