Three Sri Lankan fishing vessels apprehended; Two arrested vessels escorted to Chennai

Chennai: Three Sri lankan fishing boats along with 16 crew members were apprehended by the Indian Coastguard at east of Krishnapatnam on early Friday.

Indian Coastguard spokesman said that coastguard Dornier aircraft from Chennai Base, Indian Coast guard ship (ICGS) Vishwast and ICGS Rani Avanthibai participated in the operation.

The three boats namely Lahiru, Shanika and Dulath Putha were apprehended under under The Maritime Zones of India (Regulation of Fishing by Foreign Vessels) Act, 1981.

Shanika and Dulath Putha are being escorted by ICGS Vishwast and Lahiru by ICGS Rani Avantibai to Chennai and Kakinada respectively for handing over to local police.

Interestingly, this also comes in the wake of Indian Coastguard Ship Vaibhav apprehending four Sri Lankan fishing boats along with 24 crew members about 99 nautical miles south east of Cape Comorin on Wednesday.
