Chennai:
As the north-east monsoon has failed Chennai, Metro Water
is preparing to tackle the challenge headon and has plans to tap additional 20
MLD of water from the new well fields at Minjur, Tamaraipakkam and Panchetti.
Speaking during a seminar on ‘Monsoon 2013’ organized by
the Indian Meteorological Society, Chennai Chapter, Chennai Metro Water managing
director Dr B Chandra Mohan said that though there is only 3.3 tmc feet of
water in the four reservoirs that is supplying water to the city but resident
don’t have to panic.
“We are far better off from 2001 when water was being
supplied through trains and tankers. We have two desalination planst besides
the new Veeranam project which can cater to 60 per cent of the drinking water
needs,” Chandra Mohan said.
Even the ground water is recharged thanks to the
rainwater harvesting system.being implemented by the ADMK government besides
Kandaleru dam in Andhra Pradesh has adequate water and storage in Mettur is
also good enough, he said.
He said due to the failure of monsoon Chennai Metro water
has already curtailed the supply of water to the city from 835 MLD to 575 MLD
of water. He said last year the city sustained the summer only due to the water
in the New Veeranam Lake and the two desalination plants supplying around 180
to 200 mld of water.
He also highlighted how Metro Water tapped the water from
the Neyveli mines to augment the drinking water supply in Chennai.
“Since the groundwater was oozing out in the mines and
was not utiilised properly, we planned to tap the water. The 55 MLD water was treated
at Vadakkathur plant and sent to the
city in two months time,” Chandra Mohan said.
