Chennai:
Union Shipping Minister G K Vasan has urged the Union government to review the Katchatheevu agreement with Sri Lanka and ensure fishing rights for Indian fishermen.
Speaking on the sidelines of 5th Southern Region Shipping Conclave here on Friday, Vasan told reporters that Union government should take all steps to ensure fishing rights for Indian fishermen.
“I urge the Union government to review the 1974 Katchatheevu agreement,” the Union minister said
Interestingly, his comments come in the wake of Centre informing the Madras High Court that the sovereignty of Sri Lanka over the islet of Katchatheevu in the Palk Straits is a settled matter and Indian fishermen do not enjoy any right to fish near the Islet.
To a query on whether Congress is planning to withdraw support to Aam Aadmi Party in Delhi, Vasan said that his party backed as it felt it was for welfare of the people and development of the state. “Now we are closely watching the activities of AAP,” Vasan said, adding that people now know the ‘true colours’ of AAP.
Vasan also opposed the removal of a statue of thespian Sivaji Ganesan, installed during the previous DMK regime at the intersection of Kamarajar Salai and Radhakrishnan Salai.
“It has been there for the last seven years and it would be better if it stays,” he said.
He also parried a question over Congress alliance with DMK stating that Tamil Nadu Congress Committee will abide by the decision of All India Congress Committee.
Earlier delivering the inaugural address at the conclave, Vasan said Shipping Ministry is planning to invest Rs 26,000 crore on 30 projects planned this year. He said of the 30 projects, 15 have already been implemented.
