Chennai:
Two hundred and twelve persons detained under the Tamil Nadu
Prevention of Dangerous Activities of Bootleggers, Drug Offenders,
Goondas, Immoral Traffic Offenders and Slum Grabbers Act 1982 act
walked free after their Habeas Corpus Petitions (HCP) were allowed by
Madras High Court.
This comes after a total of 543 HCPs were listed before the special
sitting of a bench comprising of Justice V Dhanapalan and Justice G
Chockalingam on Saturday.
A total of 157 were released after their HCPs were allowed while
remaining 55 were allowed to walk free after the State Advisory Board
ordered to revoke their detention order.
This comes in the wake of Madras High Court being urged to constitute
a special bench for speedily deciding Habeas Corpus Petitions (HCP)
concerning the Act.
A petition has alleged 1600 prisoners are detained under the act and
confined to Central Prison in Puzhal. The total detention period under
the Act is 12 months and a large number of prisoners have completed
more than eight months of the total period in detention
