The enforcement wing of state commercial tax department has conducted
survey at 50 different places in the city including branches and
godownsbelonging to Hotel Saravana Bhavan, the largest chain of
vegetarian restaurants.
A commercial tax department official told Express that the survey is
being conducted in several branches of the hotel as well as godown.
An official from Saravana Bhavan confirmed the search was in the
backdrop of the recent increase in number of foot-falls in the
restaurant.
The restaurant chain has introduced various special combo offers and
reduced price of some of the dishes almost three months back, to
attract more customers, the official said.
The official said the search is still continuing.
A commercial tax official said that the action is not based on any
prior assumptions and is part of general periodical inspection. We
just want to ascertain one day collection in the hotel and to check
whether it matches the data available in the system of the department.
