39 detained Sri Lankan fishermen sail off from Chennai

Chennai:

Thirty-nine Sri Lankan fishermen who were detained in Puzhal jail
after being picked for trespassing into Indian waters heaved a sigh of
relief as they sailed off to their country in Indian Coast guard ship
Rajtarang here on Saturday.

Indian Coastguard said the Sri Lankan fishermen would be handed over
to Sri lankan authorities at Indo-Sri Lanka International Maritime
Boundary Line on Sunday.

Coastguard said that of the 39 fishermen, thirty-seven crew along with
seven boats were arrested during three operations conducted on may 11,
May 24 and June 7. The two other fishermen were detained by the naval
detachment in Vedaranyam.

Coastguard said the eight Sri Lankan fishing boats, which were
apprehended, were not released by the state government. Four boats are
staioned in Chennai, one at Vedaranyam and three at Tuticorin,
coastguard said.
