Officials said the the precise proportion of elevated and underground sections, particularly along Old Mahabalipuram Road, would be considered while preparing the Detailed Project report

Around one lakh people are expected to use Chennai Metro Rail once the underground stretch starting from Nehru Park and linking the elevated stretch in Koyambedu and from there till Chennai Airport is made operational by the middle of next year.
While the 10km metro rail stretch from Koyambedu to Alandur has failed to attract the commuters but this doesn’ t affect the officials.
“We were expecting it. But once the underground stretch from Nehru Park is linked to the elevated stretch in Airport as well as to Little Mount, we could expect at least one lakh commuters using the services,” said a senior Metro rail official.
Interestingly, Chennai Metro expects around five lakh passengers per day to use Metro rail once the entire stretch of 45 km in both the corridors is ready. “this could possibly happen by 2017, ” said the official.
Currently, Chennai Metro is attracting more commuters on weekdays and it is mostly the crowd that wants to figure out the specialty of this new commuting service being introduced in the city.
Interestingly, Chennai Metro is not open to giving up the details about the revenue being earned till now through sale of tickets.
Meanwhile efforts are on to complete the underground stretch from Nehru Park to Koyambedu. Trials are being conducted using the inspection wagon. Sources said that the trial run using the metro train in the underground stretch would possibly commence in January or February.
“this would happen once the electrification work is completed, said the official.
Meanwhile, detailed project report is being prepared for the second phase consisting of three corridors adding up to 88km, he said.
“The Detailed Project Report would be ready in the next seven months,” said the official.
This would include Madhavaram to Siruseri (41km), Koyambedu to Lighthouse (14km) and Madjavaram to Perumbakam ( 33km).
Interestingly, Chennai Metro rail was initially planning for 76km stretch in the second phase but added 12km by extending Madhavaram- Lighthouse stretch to Siruseri.
