Telecom lines have been disrupted in some rural areas due to heavy rains and Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited would restore the services once water levels recede in flood affected areas of Chengalpattu and Kancheepuram.
Interestingly, the major exchanges are functioning without any problem but we did have some issues with connections due to lakes getting breached, said chief general manager of BSNL, Chennai, S M Kalavathi.
The digging works had affected telecom connections and efforts are on to restore them, she said.
She said that although there had been power cuts, but the telecom exchanges are being run with the help of generators
She said that BSNL has received lot of complaints regarding faults during the rains and they are being looked into.
The telephone connection was affected in Chengalpattu and Kancheepuram, she said.
Meanwhile, Chennaites would have to pay additional cess of .5 per cent more on their telecom bills after a notification has been issued by the Union government.
The 0.5 per cent of Swacch Bharat Cess will be levied on all telecom services in addition to service tax of 14 per cent applicable on all bills generated after November 15, said Kalavathi.
