TN orders five departments to file 200 counter affidavits to safeguard state's interest

Tamil Nadu government has ordered five departments to file 200 counter affidavits to safeguard the interest of the state government.

Sources told Express that the the state housing board, slum clearance board, Chennai Metropolitan Development Authority, Directorate of Town and country Planning and Registrar of Cooperative Societies have been directed to file the counter affidavits before November 15 on a war footing arrangement.

It is also learnt that the Housing secretary would be holding a review meeting in this regard on November 13.

The order to file counter affidavits came in the wake of state government reviewing all pending court cases, including the contempt of court cases, and has instructed all the departments to prepare a list.

The list included number of cases pending, number of counter affidavits filed, number of interim orders passed, the petitioner, respondent as well as number of case orders passed as well as pending implementation.

Sources told Express that CMDA alone has numerous contempt petitions including some pertaining to service rules where the department is making postings without referring the seniority list and tampering the service rules without getting the permission from government.

Currently, one of the case is to be heard on November 18. It is learnt that there could be more than 1,000 cases relating to Chennai Metropolitan Development Authority alone if one also takes into account the lock and seal cases.In many of the cases, the legal

cell has hardly bothered to file any counter. Even in cases pertaining to administration, there is a huge backlog of cases.

Sources said that housing board also has nearly 1,000 cases, of which 300 pertain to non-land acquisition cases.

The issue also is the failure of the legal cell to take prompt action. In most of the cases officials have failed to comply with the court order resulting in secretary level officials cutting a sorry figure in front of the court trying to put the things in order
