After four years, CMDA is still scouting for land to build inter-city satellite bus terminus

Four years have passed but the plan to build a satellite bus terminus for south-bound buses is only on paper as Chennai Metropolitan Development Authority officials is still scouting for land for the fourth time to implement the project.

CMDA sources told Express that the officials of CMDA are examining the feasibility of using the parking space for Anna Zoological Park to be used as parking lot.

This comes after CMDA was planning to engage a counsel to argue a case in High Court to get back 88.52 acres of land, which was identified after an earlier land in Vandalur proved too costly to acquire under the new land acquisition act.

Sources said that the area presently being used as parking for Ana Zoological Park and surplus lads identified under Tamil Nadu Land Reforms Act at Kilambakkam village abutting GST Road is being examined by the officials.

This would mean that the project which was announced four years earlier could not be completed before the elections due to failure by officials to identify the land in the last four years and implement the satellite bus terminus project.

Sources said that four years ago the government had accorded sanction to Velachery satellite bus terminus to ease the traffic congestion in Koyambedu. The project, which was to be taken up by Chennai Metropolitan Development authority, was likely to come up at the site near the MRTS station measuring about 12 acres. However, this was dropped due to  proposed monorail station in the area and lack of adequate land to set up the satellite bus terminal.

Later, the state government identified more than 65 acres of wetland to be developed as satellite bus terminus in Vandalur. The site was geographically placed in a strategic location in view of its proximity to the National Highway 45 (GST Road) and Outer Ring Road. But then this also could not materialise as notices under Section 4 (1) were not issued before the New Land Acquisition Act took effect.

Sources said that the government had passed orders for getting the land in February without the knowledge of the Act.

Surprisingly, now the government is looking at the parking space of Vandalur Zoo to be converted into a satellite bus terminus. This means, the state government has to seek number of clearances before going ahead with the project. This is unlikely to take place in the next six to eight months, said sources.

This means now the satellite bus terminus for south bound buses would have to wait till the elections.
