Chennai:
The passenger traffic in Chennai airport during the month of December has dwindled by -18.8 per cent due to the floods, according to figures released by Airport Authority of India.
Even the overall growth from April to December is negligible and Chennai Airport airport has registered only a growth of 4. 5 per cent. Of the 18 international airports, the traffic growth is bottom placed but a notch above Kochi airport which has -8.8 per cent growth.
Airport Authority of India director Deepak Shastri says that this is a temporary setback for Chennai airport as it had faced one of the worst natural calamity during December.
“We will bounce back with renewed vigour,” he says.
Interestingly, Chennai airport’s has recorded negative growth in passengers traffic in the month of December when compared to last year. The passenger traffic registered in December this year was 10.4 lakh. Last year it was 12.85 lakh.
The passenger traffic, both national and international in the last eight months not showing any significant rise, doesn’t bode well for the airport. But then it is not the fault of officials, who have been working with a limited infrastructure.
The airport has already reached its saturation level and the only hope is to look for a secondary airport. Cities like Bangalore already has moved to a larger airport due to the raipd growth and expansion of the city while Chennai, which earlier had plans for a Greenfield airport, has put off the plans despite huge investments come pouring in.
While the mood may be sombre at Chennai, the nation overall has seen a spurt in passenger traffic. As per the latest data released by International Air Transport Association (IATA), a trade body representing 260 airlines, the revenue passenger kilometer (RPK) in domestic sector in India grew by 25 per cent. This is quite huge when global passenger traffic during 2015 rose 6. 5pc RPK.
Interestingly, this was the strongest result since the post-Global Financial Crisis rebound in 2010 and well above the 10-year average annual growth rate of 5.5pc,” said IATA.
