‘Hot Pursuit’ policy against Pak not feasible, says US expert

Should India adopt the ‘Hot Pursuit’ policy to tackle the insurgency backed by Pakistan as it had earlier done in Myanmar? “No” says a US defence expert/

Mark Bucknam, a US professor of National Security Strategy and a course director at the National War College in Fort McNair, Washington DC, told reporters that ‘Hot Pursuit’ is not a viable option for India in the aftermath of Pathankot air base attack by Pakistan sponsored insurgents as it has the prospect of escalating into a nuclear war.

Bucknam also said that US interest is not to see any conflict in south Asia. “Some people want India and Pakistan to go to war but US opposes it,” he added.

He also hailed the India government policy of showing restraint after the Pathankot attacks. “it is mature on part of India of showing restraint despite being provoked,”Bucknam said.

He also highlighted how the United States helped Pakistan in nurturing Taliban and other outfits against the Soviets. After the Cold War, the same organisations have come together to attack the interests of India and United States.

“After 9/11, the pressure has been put on Pakistan government to stop supporting these outfits. Last year, the terror attacks have come down,” said Bucknam.

Interestingly, Bucknam defended Pakistan stating that tghe country is now not making differentiation between good terror and bad terror
