Smugglers using Myanmar route to smuggle gold into Chennai

Chennai:

Directorate of Revenue Intelligence officials on Monday foiled a bid by gold smugglers who are using the borders of Myanmar to smuggle 9kg of gold worth Rs 2.67 crore and transport it to Chennai using rail route from Kolkata.

On Monday, working on specific intelligence, DRI officials intercepted two passengers, who were travelling in Howrah-Chennai Mail, at Chennai Central station.

During interrogation, DRI officials recovered nine packets of gold bars wrapped in black colour adhesive tape from one Maria Selvaraj.

DRI officials said that the gold had foreign markings such as ‘Valcambi Suisse.’

The gold is valued at Rs 2.67 crore and is seized under the provisions of Customs Act, 1961.

It is learnt from DRI that Selvaraj has admitted that he was given the gold by one person of Myanmar origin at Kolkata and he acted as mere carrier out of monetary consideration.

Selvaraj, who is remanded to judicial custody, has taken the female passenger so as to disguise themselves as a family to camouflage the purpose of travel with illegitimate gold as tourism.

Interestingly, DRI revealed that gold is now being smuggled from Myanmar-India border with the help of locals and is sent into India through different routes to avoid checking by customs.

Local Chennai-based passengers travelling to Kolkata smuggled sizeable quantity of gold and DRI was keeping track of suspected passengers by interacting with customs field formations of Andhra pradesh, DRI officials revealed.

Last week, DRI officials have detected 12 KG of gold bars concealed in container brought from Tuticorin sea port.
