Chennai:
The Radio Frequency Identification which will do away the
manual processing method to track containers and ease congestion on the roads
as well as Chennai Port wil be fully operational from February 15.
In order to minimize human interface, RFID system has
been implemented on a trial basis successfully in the Port covering Container freight
stations, Port Gates and Terminal Gates to facilitate free movement of
vehicles.
The Equipment and devices have been installed and the
system will be fully operational from February 15 which will facilitate trouble
free movement of trucks through Port as well as Terminal gates.
Meanwhile, in order to ensure that only trucks with valid
documents are entering the Port area, a Document Screening Center has been made
operational at Bhavani Amman Kovil junction on the approach road of the
Port.
This has ensured that only trucks with valid documents
are allowed to enter into the Port area and other trucks are being diverted
from this point.
Chennai Port has also laned the roads within the custom
bound area by providing dividers which has helped to regulate movement of
trucks. Efforts are on to widen the roads besides providing concrete road along
with shore protection works from Suraj Agro to South tower of old entrance.
This has been 50 per cent complete, said a Chennai Port spokesman.
