Chennai:
US has put forth a new national security strategy last
year that focuses on pressurising Pakistan to end its support to extremists
operating in India, according to US defence policy expert.
Speaking during a discussion on ‘The US National Security
Strategy: Implications for India’, Mark A Bucknam, a professor of US National
Security Strategy and a course director at National War College in Washington
DC, said that the US was against nuclear proliferation as well as war between
India and Pakistan.
He also highlighted how the US-India ties has resulted in
flowering of defence cooperation with Apache helicopter parts co-manufactured
in Hindustan Aeronautics Limited workshop in Hyderabad.
He said that the reset of US-India relations happened
during the visit of then US President Bill Clinton to India. “The reset of US
India ties is going on for a long time although there had been hiccups,” he
said.
However, the US-Russia ties which were reset with Russia
during Obama administration has been reduced to cooperation following the
Crimea issue.
He also said that it would be only after elections in US,
one would be sure whether climate change would be key focus of US foreign
policy.
He also said that US does not want to counter China but
was for a friendly rise of China. He said that US is for freedom of navigation
in South China sea.
Interestingly, Bucknam also indirectly highlighted how US
treasury after studying then Soviet Union’s weakness dependence on oil raised
the oil price with the help of Saudi Arabia. “This resulted in the collapse of
USSR’s economy,” he said.
Interestingly, then Ronald Regan administration in the US
never wanted the USSR to collapse. It
just wanted to have trade ties and behave in a way which United States wanted, revealed
the defence expert.
