Chennai: to swell before the ATMs and people withdrew Rs 2,000 without complaining once the rain subsided
It was a salary day for many but serpentine crowds were not visible in front of banks and bankers feel it was due to the impact of Cyclone Nada as well as the availability of only Rs 2,000 at most of the branches in and around the city.
Thomas Franco, senior vice- president of All India Bank Officers Federation told Express that the banks are expected to be crowded once the rains stop after Cyclone Nada makes a landfall.
However, situation in banks continue to be grim with the shortage of Rs 500 denomination currency and absence of Rs 100 notes.
“I went to the bank to get Rs 2,500 but they asked me either to fill the withdrawal slip for Rs 2,000 or Rs 4,000. I opeted for Rs 4,000 and got two Rs 2,000 notes,” said a pensioner.
“I will be facing lot of difficulty in exchanging these currencies,” she said. Interestingly, the availability of Rs 2,000 in banks may be one of the reasons for lack of crowd, said a bank official.
However, with cash crisis in Chennai, Dharmapuri and other areas of the state, Reserve Bank of India is transferring the surplus cash in currency chests where the deposit is more and withdrawal is less to areas like Chennai where the withdrawal is more and deposits are less, says Franco.
Interestingly, this move may help the cash drying up faster but it is not enough, says a banker, on condition of anonymity as RBI has issued guidelines to bank officials on not to address media over demonetisation.
It is learnt most of bank branches downed shutters due to limited cash and many are hoping that on Friday, they will get more cash. However, bankers say they want Rs 500 in huge quantum. “Currently, the availability of rs 500 is not enough,” says a banker.
Meanwhile, the crowd continue
