Wipro's Rs 600cr investment plan in TN hits roadblock

Information Technology major Wipro’s plan to set up development Centres at Chennai and Coimbatore entailing investments of Rs 600 crore has hit a road block with Chennai Metropolitan Development Authority yet to give building  permit.

Sources told Express that Wipro had signed a memorandum of understanding with the state government during the Global Investors Meet held last year to set up development centres at ELCOT Special Economic Zone in Sholinganallur and Mahindra World City in Chennai and  in Coimbatore’s Elcot special economic zone.

Initially, the plan was to start constructing the development centre at Sholinganallur once the agreement got signed at the Global investors Meet last year.

“The plan is to construct the development centre at Sholinganallur as soon as CMDA gives approval,” sources told Express. It is learnt that the target to complete the project was set at March 2018.

However, the project could not move from the planning stage since last year as CMDA has yet to give its stamp of approval. The delay has reached to such an extent that Information Technology department has sought the intervention of housing secretary.

“The housing secretary has sought a status report along with the reason for pendency of project at Chennai Metropolitan Development,” sources said. It is learnt that CMDA has been given a deadline to submit a report by Monday.  

It is learnt from CMDA sources that the project is delayed as the revalidated no objection certificate (NOC) from Airport Authority of India and revalidated environmental clearance is awaited from Wipro. Wipro officials refused to comment.

The Global Investors Meet attracted Rs 10,950 crore from Information Technology sector. The investments could create 2 lakh jobs in the next three years, according to state government.
