Indian Coast Guard averts major disaster in Chennai Port

A major disaster in Chennai Port was averted due 

to timely help by Indian Coast Guard when vessels anchored in the berths started drifting due to the impact of winds as Cyclone Vardha struck the coast of Chennai, according to Indian Coast Guard spokesman.

It was around 9.40am on Monday when the ropes of anchored port crane vessel ‘F C Thangam’ parted and the vessel started drifting towards the decommissioned submarine ‘Vagli’ which was also berthed in the port.

As the vessel drifted onto Vagli, the ropes gave away and soon thereafter, the entire ships berthed on the port started drifting. These include M V Akbar, Dredging Corporation of India (DCI) Dredger Kaveri and Dredging Corporation of India vessel VH1.

This resulted in the vessels frantically calling Chennai Port for assistance. Subsequently, two tugs ‘Sea Lion Apex’ and ‘Ocean Fame’ were pressed into service but the Tugs barely managed to hold the drifting vessels due to the squally weather.

This posed a grave danger to other vessels berthed in the port. As the situation went out of control and the weather worsened, Chennai Port expressed its inability and the responsibility was shouldered by Indian Coast guard.

Indian Coast Guard Ship (ICGS) Varad deployed two teams with additional manpower and ropes to take charge of the situation. Then the vessel took control of re-berthing operation along with the tugs and averted a possible disaster in the port by berthing the vessels again.
