Cyclone Vardha fails to provide enough rains for the city to quench its summer thirst

The reservoirs may have started gurgling with water as Cyclone Vardha struck Chennai’s coast bringing in much needed rains along with heavy winds but water managers feel it is not enough for the city to withstand the summer.

The water levels in the four reservoirs--- Poondi, Chembarambakkam, Red Hills and Cholavaram is around 1,890 million cubic feet of water and it could at the most last four months only.

The rains and cyclone were a welcome sign for water managers as the reservoirs had less than 1TMC feet prior to Cyclone Vardha and there were plans to implement the contingency plan.

Sources say the addition of only 1TMC feet of water may have failed to bring in much needed cheer water managers who are still hoping for more rains.

Interestingly, last year just before the advent of December 1 floods, the reservoirs had almost dried up and the city’s hope was the ground water resources even as then managing director started rationing water and tapped every resources to ensure the city doesn’t go thirsty.

However, the city is continuing to get the total supply of 830MLD of water and authorities have yet to press the panic button.

Meanwhile, Chennai Metro Water said it continues to supply water to the city despite Cyclone Vardha. The cyclone never had any impact on the water supply, said a Metro Water spokesman. 

However, many multi-storied buildings in the city are facing the problem of tapping the water stored in their sump. It is learnt that Chennai Metro Water is supplying water to those localities.
