Former TN bureaucrat becomes IMU vice-chancellor

Chennai:
Ashok Vardhan Shetty, a 1983 batch Tamil Nadu cadre Indian Administrative Officer who took voluntary retirement from the service, has taken over charge as the new vice-chancellor of Indian Maritime University.
He succeeds Capt M Baweja, who took over the charge of the post of vice-chancellor after Prof G Raghuram resigned on March.
The  varsity is mired in controversies following the appointment of 31 facultyby Raghuram with two shipping secretaries contradicting each other. While the former shipping secretary P K Sinha gave a clean chit to the appointments in April, his successor Vishwapati Trivedi said Shipping Ministry is likely to initiate action against Raghuram for his role in the irregularities in appointment of 31 faculty.
The university was also pulled into a legal battle and several posts in marine and nautical streams were not filled.
Now after 10 months, the new vice-chancellor faces the challenge to bring in order in the university and to resolve many pending issues.
When Express contacted Shetty, the former bureaucrat said that it is his first day in office and it is indeed a new challenge. "I look forward to solving all the issues and making the university one of the best in the world," Shetty added.
