Hello! My phone is smarter than your laptop

C Shivakumar
Chennai:
Kruthika prefers her mobile phone more than her laptop for staying connected with her friends.
"I stay connected with them and we share everything. It is minute by minute updates either on bus or anywhere," she says while interacting with her friend.
An avid user of facebook, Whatsapp, Gtalk and Skype, the 26-year-old executive says that mobile phone is easy to carry and one can access these application from anywhere provided you have Internet connection.
Although she rues that she could not browse multiple sites at a same time as she does while using her desktop, Kruthika also uses the mobile phone for browsing the newspapers.
"Now it is part of my system," says Kruthika, who is one of the million users who uses their phone to stay connected with their friends through social networking sites.
As more and more Chennaites get hitched to social networking sites with the availability of cheaper smart phones, mobile application makers and telecom firms are rethinking their strategies to enhance their customer base.
Anand Surana, chief executive officer and managing director of ICEGEN Computing Ltd, says that in the future all transactions would be carried out only through the tablets. he says the mobile appliations market in India is worth $8 billion. Surana who is coming out with mobile applications for farmers in rural areas of India besides many other applications feels that the mobile revolution would change the way one does business as well as the outlook towards education.
Interestingly, the mobile revolution has forced mobile phones to rethink their strategies. Airtel has formed alliance with social media giants like Twitter and Facebook to enable its customers to log on these services even on a non- smartphone device while Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited is offering 3G services to all its mobile phone users.
BSNL spokeswoman Vijaya told Express that as the data usage is increasing in Chennai, BSNL is now offering 3G services at affordable rates. She says the thrust is on prepaid customers and BSNL is providing them with regular vouchers for downloads. “Our data usage plan is low when compared with other competitors,” she says.
Interestingly, BSNL says the data consumption among users is 2.5 terrabytes in Chennai alone during the holidays. “Otherwise it is 1.5 to 2.5 terrabytes of data consumption. But we plan to double it with our new offer of providing 3G services to all our subscribers,” she says.
Telecom firms believe that the social networking sites and the availability of cheaper mobile phones has resulted in more and more people accessing the Net. According to a recent report by International Telecommunications Union, mobile internet users in the developing nations are growing 27 times as against the developed countries. As per a recent report, approximately 87.1 million Indians access Internet via mobile phones out of which an overwhelming number engaged on social media platform.
Airtel is one of the first telecom operator that has formed alliance with social media giants like Twitter and Facebook to enable its customers to log on these services even on a non- smartphone device. The company has already been successful in tapping the urban and rural masses with services such as Re1 video download store and special plans to access social networking sites (like Facebook and Twitter). An Airtel spokesperson feels access to these social networking sites on low cost mobile phones is expected to be one of the driving force to increase the data penetration across Indian cities.
Vijaya concurs. She says that consumers are spending more on data usage by trying to access social networking sites. Interestingly, the most browsed is facebook, Gtalk, Whatsapp, Orkut, Skype and other social networking sites.
Interestingly, mobile phone penetration has grown in Tamil Nadu, which has the second highest mobile users in India. The state currently has 71.81 million subscribers, according to the TRAI data. And, in terms of tele-density, or the number of phones per 100 inhabitants, Tamil Nadu (109.97) is second only to Delhi.
This has also resuted in the growth of mobile advertisements. According to a report mobile advertising spend is currently pegged at Rs 300 crore ($45 million),and is expected to increase by 43 per cent in the next 12 months. A report prepared by Mobile Marketing Association (MMA) in partnership with exchange4media states mobile advertising is slated to grow at 43 pc to reach Rs. 430 crore in 2014. Factors that are actively contributing to the growth include availability of wide array of smart phones and tablets across price spectrum.
