The Maritime Training Institute (Thoothukudi Campus) of The Shipping Corporation of India was inaugurated by Union Minister for Shipping G K Vasan .
Vasan also inaugurated three Port projects, namely Award of Concession for New Mechanical Handling Equipments, Quarter Guard Arms Building and New Roads to Check Post No.II.
The Ministry of Shipping had taken a decision to establish a Maritime Training Institute by The Shipping Corporation of India Ltd, in V.O.Chidambaranar Port Trust to facilitate the imparting of quality Maritime education and Training to the youths of Tamilnadu and to South India. The Maritime Training Institute of SCI, Mumbai have trained about 1.5 lakh candidiates over the past 26 years with the advantage of being able to offer onboard training in own diversified fleet of 77 vessels.
The classes for the first batch also commenced in the existing facilities provided by V.O. Chidambarnar Port Trust and this would continue till the new campus for the Maritime Training Institute is constructed in the 4 hectares of land identified in the eastern side of Tuticorin Thermal Power Station Camp-II campus.
Vasan also laid the foundation stone for Construction of a permanent Training Institute with class room, workshop, swimming pool, residential accommodation for cadets and faculty/staff etc on the Port land situated at eastern side of Camp-II quarters of TTPS with the size of 200 m x 200 m (40000 Sqm).
For the Port Project, Letter for issue of Award of Concession for New Mechanical Handling Equipments was handed over to the concessionaire M/s.IMC Ltd.,-PSTS Ltd., Consortium, Chennai, by S. Natarajan, Chairman, V.O. Chidambaranar Port Trust in the presence of Vasan. The total Project cost is Rs.49.20 crores and the capacity addition would be 8.72 Million Tonnes. The project had been taken up on Public-Private-Partnership(PPP) mode (Build, Own and Operate basis) for a period of 10 years. The Concessionaire had offered the highest Percentage Gross Revenue share of 26.55% and would deploy 2 Nos. Harbour Mobile Cranes of 120T capacity each Harbour Mobile crane - 2 Nos. Grab – 2 Nos. per crane for handling different type of dry bulk cargo). The concessionaire shall collect crane hire charges/Revenue from the Port users directly, as per the upfront tariff approved by the TAMP. This project is expected to commence operation from January 2014.
Vasan inaugurated the New Road from Tuticorin Thermal Power Plant Traffic Island to Check Post No-II. At present, the entire traffic is moving through the four lane V.O.C Road, which passes through two bridges that leads to NH 138, which further connects to NH45-B. There is no alternate route available to divert the entire traffic of Port. As such the Port has proposed to take-up the renovation proposal of the bridge. The new road from TTPS junction to Check Post No-II with overall length of 3.4 Kms will lead to Muthiahpuram and further on to NH 138. Accordingly, the work was taken up at a total cost of Rs. 310 lakhs.
The Quarter Guard Arms Building for Central Industrial Security Force was also inaugurated by Vasan. The Port Management has provided the requisite infrastructure facilities like Quarter Guard building, CISF Barracks, Assistant Commandant Office near Administrative Office Complex, Check Gates and Residential Quarters within the Port premises, including, effective communication systems. The proposal to construct Arms Building within the CISF Barrack was taken up at a cost of Rs.38.95 lakhs.
