A monument to celebrate Chennai's ties with Armenia

Armenia is planning to erect a monument at the entrance of Armenian Street in the city to mark the 300 years of its existence and 2,500 years of India-Armenian cultural ties, according to honorary consul of the Republic of Armenia Shivkumar Eashwaran.
Talking to Express on the sidelines of an interaction organised by the Confederation of Indian Industry, Shivkumar said that the place has been identified and Armenian government is awaiting clearance from the state government.
He said the monument is likely to be inaugurated by the end of the year. He said the monument is being built under the initiative of Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa after she met the envoy of Armenia Ara Hakobyan twice. "She wants it to be done. We are working with the state government in this regard," said Shivkumar.
He said that it is likely that Chief Minister may also inaugurate the monument provided we get the dates. Interestingly, either the prime minister or president of Armenia would be present during the inauguration of the monument.
Shivkumar said that the Armenian Street was the home for the Armenians, who have settled in Chennai, in the 16th century. On this Armenian Street is the Armenian Church, one of the oldest churches of India. There were 300 families before independence. Most of them use to lend money to the British government. "Now we hardly have any. i am working towards rebuilding the age-old ties," said Shivkumar.
Interestingly, Armenian government has selected an architect for building the monument. Shivkumar says that the Armenian government is taking all the precautions not to violate the Supreme Court order on arches. "We don't want to get into any judicial issue," he says.The monument will be erected at the entrance of Armenian street,"he said.
Shivkumar said that the Armenia's ties with India is more than 2,500 years old. He said that Chennai plays a crucial role and it was in this city the constitution of Armenia was written.
Later during an inteaction meeting, he wooed the city businesses to invest in Armenia. An Indian business delegation would be visiting Armenia from September 24 to 28, said CII past chairman southern region and chairman of CII's international linkages task force T T Ashok.
