Chennai:
A public consultation to restore the Adyar river on
Wednesday was abruptly cancelled due to protests over the lack of participation
by the people.
As soon as the meeting resumed seeking suggestions from
people to support the preparation of master plan for Phase III of the Adyar River
Restoration Project, a group of people protested forcing the Chennai River
Restoration Trust officials to call off the meeting.
The group lead by Tamil Nadu Theendamai Munnani president
S K Siva questioned the representation of the people in the meeting and staged
protest outside the hall in the Public Works Department premises.
Official sources told Express that the meeting would be
held at a later date. When queried over the lack of participation of PWD
officials in the meeting, sources said the meeting was conducted by Chennai River
Restoration Trust only.
The meeting comes in the wake of state government
announcing to take up Rs 3,833.62-crore project to clean up the Cooum river.
It is not Cooum River Restoration Trust... It is known as Chennai Rivers Restoration Trust...
