TN planning to have metro rail, rail freight corridor along Chennai's Outer Ring Road

Chennai:
The Outer Ring Road is likely to have a metro rail and a rail freight corridor as L&T Rambolll is preparing a feasibility report in this regard, according to CMDA sources.
CMDA sources told Express that L&T Ramboll is currently studying the possibility of having both freight corridor as well as passenger rail service in the stretch.
“The report is likely to be submitted in next three months time. The study is on the utilization of 50 metre strip of land adjoining Outer Ring Road,” a CMDA source added.
Interestingly, it was Ennore Port which planned to develop the rail link along the Outer Ring Road, a major transport corridor being developed by the Chennai Metropolitan Development Authority along the periphery of Chennai Metropolitan Area (CMA).
The rail link was proposed in the 22 metre strip of land owned by the state government which runs parallel to the Outer Ring Road. The land was also earmarked for Chennai Metro Rail.
Interestingly, this also comes in the wake of state government planning to prepare a detailed project report for Phase II of the project in newly identified corridors.
Ennore Port plans to implement the freight corridor project which is estimated worth Rs 700 crore in two phase while Chennai Metro rail officials say they have yet to identify the area for the phase II project. However, sources did say that metro rail does have a stake in the strip of land which runs parallel to ORR.
Chennai Metropolitan Development Authority is also planning a grid of roads along Outer ring road to develop it as a potential area to absorb the future growth of the city and the authority has already accorded permission for developments along the Mudichur and Palanthandalam villages.
Meanwhile, CMDA has completed the land Acquisition for the entire stretch of ORR. The 62.3 km long outer ring road connects NH 45 (GST Road) at Vandalur, NH 4 (GWT Road) at Nazarathpet, NH 205 (CTH Road) at Nemilicherry(Thiruninravur), NH 5 (GNT Road) at Nallur and TPP road at Minjur.
