Traffic in busy Anna Salai stretch hit after chemical leaks out from metro rail enclosure

Chennai:
Traffic in the busy Anna Salai stretch was hit during the rush hour after a chemical used to soften the sand for tunneling operations eked out of an opening and spread onto the road.
Metro rail officials told Express that the incident happened around 5pm when the foam leaked out from the opening on Anna Salai-Walajah Road intersection.
“The traffic at the busy stretch was hit for nearly 30 minutes and officials cordoned off the area as work began to restore the road,” said a metro rail official.
“It took nearly three hours to restore the road as iron planks were put on the loose soil. The road was restored at around 8pm,” said a metro rail spokesman.
The work was carried out using makeshift lights as well as a JCB which was used to transport the iron planks.
A traffic policeman at the site said that traffic was disrupted for nearly 30 minutes. Interestingly, the traffic police were working hard to reduce the traffic backlog by manning each and every intersection.
Interestingly, many commuters hardly had any inkling of what caused the delay.
Meanwhile, the tunnel work between Government Estate to LIC building in the 30 metres stretch was completed, a metro rail spokesman said.
