Kamarajar Port acquires 647 acre of salt land; to build salt research institute, arch to pay homage to Mahatma's salt satyagraha

Chennai:

Union Shipping Minister G K Vasan on Saturday said that Kamarajar Port will build a salt research institute and an arch to pay homage to Mahatma Gandhi’s salt satyagraha movement in the 647.8 acres of land acquired by Kamarajar Port (formerly Ennore Port).

He was reacting to the request made by Union Minister of state for Commerce and Industry Sudarshan Natchiappan, who was instrumental in getting the land for Kamarajar Port after a 12 year deadlock.

Speaking after the signing of agreement to transfer 647.8 acres of Salt department’s land to Kamarajar port besides signing of memorandum of understanding with Indian Oil Corporation for development of LNG terminal and inking of concession agreement with Adani Ennore Container Terminal, Union Shipping Minister G K Vasan said that the salt land, worth Rs 483 crore, would be put to good commercial use by Kamarajar port so as to generate substantial revenue of the port.

He said that Kamarajar port has 2083 acres of backup land. As the port has potential to add more terminals, there is a need for acquisition of more land so that its development is not constrained.

He also said during the current financial year the port has a capacity to handle 24 million tonnes.
