Chennai Port’s state-of-the-art Cruise Facilitation Centre to open on May

Chennai Port would soon emerge as a destination for cruise vessels with the opening of state-of-the art cruise passenger facilitation centre on par with airport terminals on May this year.

Chennai Port Chairman Cyril George told Express that the cruise passenger facilitation centre, whose modernisation is funded by the Ministry of Tourism, at an estimated cost of Rs.16.72 crores, will be ready for operation by the end of April.

“The work will be completed by next month end and it will be operational from May,” said George.

Interestingly, the cruise passenger facilitation centre has won Chennai Port “Best Tourist Friendly Harbour.”  The passenger facilitation centre has world class infrastructure and gives an advantage to Chennai Port when compared with its competitors.

  

This award initiative has been supported by the Union Ministry of Tourism The upgraded terminal will have new escalators, passport scanner, baggage scanners, duty free shops, media centres, customs and immigration clearance facilities, first aid and food court facilities..

Currently, the port has regular passenger service with Port Blair and Andaman and Nicobar Islands. However, international cruise liners also drop anchor at Chennai and the opening up of a seprate state-of-the art terminal would boost cruise tourism.
