Release of fishermen attributed to pressure built through social media

Chennai:

The release of 49 Indian fishermen, including 44 from Tamil Nadu, could happen due to intense pressure being put on state and Centre through social media and other forum, according to Valarmathi of National Domestic Workers Movement, Migrant Forum India.

Valarmathi, who has been using the twitter to put pressure on Ministry of External Affairs and Prime Minister’s Office, thanked Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa for taking up the cause with the Union government.

“It was a long process to get the fishermen freed. We had been in constant touch with the Indian embassy in Tehran as well as in Dubai to know the day to day affairs of the stranded fishermen who were flown to Chennai on special passports,” she said.

Of the 49 fishermen, thirty-one are from Kanyakumari, two from Thoothkudi and 11 from Ramanathapuram while five are from Gujarat.

While fishermen landed in Chennai airport at around 4.40am, their exit from airport was delayed due to their emergency passports.

Talking about the ordeal in the prison, Antoniappan, who hails from Muttam, said that they had never expected that they would be freed. “It was 94 days of incarceration and there were rumours that we would be sent to Pakistan. We thank Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa, Valarmathi and Father A Churchill for getting our freedom,” said 46-year-old Antoniappan while on his way to his fishing hamlet along with 14 other fishermen.

To a query whether he would think of venturing again to a foreign country in search of livelihood, Antoniappan said that now Chief Minister had offered Rs 5 lakh. “I will start a business and think of getting my daughters married,” he said.

But then the ordeal of Tamil migrant workers doesn’t end here. “It is time that the state government should think of having a separate ministry catering to the Tamils who are working abroad,” says Valarmathi.

“Even now we have a case where six Tamil construction workers returned from Qatar without getting paid for their work. There are lots of issues which Tamils are facing abroad and it is time for the government to think on these lines,” she said
