Does Chennai Slaughter houses comply with SC strictures?

Chennai has three slaughter houses which are functional but do they comply with the strictures of Supreme Court order passed in 2012?

While social activists have raised doubts over the compliance, Chennai Corporation officials told Express that they have complied with the Apex court strictures. 

This comes as Union government has asked the state government to submit a report by March 11 on whether the slaughter houses in the state comply with Supreme Court order. The report would be put before the court during its hearing on April 4. 

There are three slaughter houses in Chennai which are currently functional. They are located at Perambur, Villivakkam and Saidapet. A new state-of-the art slaughter house is to come up at Kallikuppam in Ambattur.

Of the three, two -- Villivakkam and Saidapet have effluent treatment plants while a biomethanation plant is to be set up for Perambur slaughter house.

People for Cattle in India founder Arun Prasanna says that the state government is not complying with the strictures passed by the Supreme Court and the Perambur slaughter house should be shut down.

“How much time do they require. We can’t giving them time. Slaughter House is a red industry and those without effluent treatment plants should be shut down, said Prasanna.

Prasanna’s contention is that the state committee for slaughter houses mandated by the Supreme Court is only on paper. He alleges the committee hardly meets. But officials deny the allegation.

Prasanna also alleges that steroids are injected into animals before killing it. “The quality of meat being consumed goes unchecked,” he contends.

Interestingly, the Centre has asked the state to provide a detailed 14 point summary of action taken to comply with the Supreme Court order

It is learnt that the action taken by the state will be computed and discussed during a joint meeting of all state government and Union territories on March 18 at New Delhi.
