TN sets March 15 deadline for officials to dispose all contempt of court cases

Tamil Nadu government has set March 15 deadline for all the departments to dispose of all contempt cases pending in High Court.

This was decided during the meeting of all secretaries being held on February 26. The meeting was chaired by chief secretary.

It is learnt that the chief secretary has directed the head of the departments to dispose the cases by either filing appeal or compliance.

This comes after information elicited through Right to Information stated that more than 20,000 contempt of court petitions are pending against Tamil Nadu government officials in Madras High Court and Madurai Bench between the year 2010 to February 16, 2014. 

The information under RTI Act which was provided by deputy registrar (administration) of Madras High Court reveals that Madras High Court has 12,527 petitions of contempt of court pending against government officials while the Madurai Bench has a total of 8,475 Contempt of court cases pending against the officials

Interestingly, the Chief secretary has directed the officials that wherever information pertaining to contempt of court is not available, it should be intimated to the Registry of Madras High court and data be obtained from the registry without any further delay.

Sources revealed that Housing Secretary has planned to conduct a review meeting on all pending contempt cases on Thursday. It is learnt that more than 15 contempt of court cases involving Chennai Metropolitan development authority is pending in the Madras High Court. 

This comes after a petition has alleged that hat Madras High court and Madurai Bench have passed many directions and orders against the government officials but most of the orders are not complied.
