NHRC demands report on Sivakasi fire accident

Chennai:
National Human Rights Commission on Friday set four weeks deadline to Tamil Nadu government to submit a report on the fire accident in a fireworks factory in Sivakasi that killed 38 people and injured 55 others.

The notice was issued to the chief secretary after NHRC received complaints from a non-governmental representative and a rights activist alleging state’s failure in ensuring adequate safety measures.

NHRC said the case was registered on the basis of a media report forwarded by a non-governmental organization representative Anup Kumar Srivastava. The rights body also received a complaint from human rights activist R H Bansal wherein he alleged that 54 persons died in the incident.

It is reportedly claimed that 90 per cent of fireworks of the country are being made in Sivakasi and no adequate safety measures are being ensured by the government,  NHRC said.

NHRC stated that the complainants requested a detailed enquiry in the matter and demanded adequate compensation to the victims and families of the deceased.
