Christians condemn desecration of Idinthakarai church


Chennai:
Thousands of Christians on Wednesday observed a day long fast to condemn the alleged desecration of St. Lourdes Church in Idanthakarai and urged the government to take action against those involved.

Speaking to reporters on the sidelines of the agitation against the desecration of church, police excesses in Koodankulam and seeking protection of minority Christian community, Archbishop of Madras Mylapore AM Chinnappa said the police in a bid to quell the protests in Koodankulam allegedly violated the sanctity of the church by entering its premises and allegedly desecrating the statue of Mother Mary.

“This act has infuriated us. We urge the Chief Mnister to take immediate action against the erring cops,” Chinappa said.

Christian outfits also demanded action against the policeman who opened fire at Antony John at Manappadu in Tuticorin district. “The family of Antony John should be paid compensation and a government job for one of the family member,” the outfits demanded.  

The outfits also stressed on the need for dialogue and to create awareness among the public on the positive aspects of nuclear energy.

It also urged the government to withdraw cases against all those involved in the protest against Koodankulam nuclear site.
