Rs 1,200 cr ITC luxury hotel resurrects Chola grandeur

The grandeur of Cholas was resurrected in Chennai as Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa inaugurated Rs 1,200 crore luxury hotel of ITC on Saturday.

Spread over an area of 1.5 million square feet, the design of the 600-room super premium integrated luxury hotel complex ITC Grand Chola was inspired by the Chola dynasty.

Speaking after the inauguration of the hotel here on Saturday, ITC Group Chairman Y C Deveshwar said Grand Chola is World’s largest green hotel and their second property in the city. “This will alter the tourism and convention landscape in the region,” he said.

The hotel’s 100,000 sq ft of banqueting and convention facilities will transform Chennai into India’s convention capital contending with markets like Singapore and Malaysia.

It also has 30,000 square feet of pillarless ballroom, the largest in the country, besides 10 food and beverage outlets and a 23,000 square feet of kaya kalp spa, ITC’s signature spa brand. The hotel also boasts of 21,000 square feet of luxury retail space.

The hotel has cutting edge technology that employs one-of-its-kind iPad controlled technology with features created exclusively by the ITC hotels team.

Deveshwar says ITC is currently planning to invest in other businesses in the state. The chief minister has offered her support for ITC initiatives, he said. Currently, ITC has plans to convert its WIMCO match factory into food processing unit besides setting up a logistics hub in 30-40 acre of land in Chennai.

Interestingly, ITC is also planning ventures in coffee, milk-based products and health drinks.

As part of expanding its hotel business, the Group has lined up investments of Rs 25,000 crore over the next five years. Deveshwar said the group has plans to build a luxury hotel in Colombo worth approximately Rs 500 crore and has a presence in Nepal and Bangladesh. “We have plans to add another 500 rooms to the existing 800 rooms and would be setting up properties in Coimbatore, Ahmedabad, Amritsar and Bhubaneshwar.
