Chennai plans parking company to regulate parking

By C Shivakumar
Chennai may soon have a parking management company on the lines of Hungarian capital Budapest to develop and manage quality parking lots.
Sources said the State government is mulling on a proposal to establish Chennai City Parking Management Company to identify, develop and maintain parking lots.
The proposed company, which is likely to be set up under the Corporation, will not only prevent congestion but also increase the Corporation’s revenue manifold. Sources said that the company will also prevent revenue leakages.
“In the absence of effective parking management, informal systems come into play, leading to revenue leakages,” official sources pointed out.
Interestingly, the proposal to have a parking management company comes in the wake of a report submitted by a State delegation, which visited Hungarian capital Budapest recently. The report highlighted how Budapest has made incredible strides in revitalizing public spaces. “Miles of streets have been redone into vibrant public spaces, including pedestrian zones, where vehicle traffic is restricted,” the report has stated.
It also highlighted how underground parking spaces were created under the streets and busy junctions in Budapest. Some of the features of Budapest parking management include charging the vehicles for the duration of parking instead of the lump sum amount besides having six options of paying parking fees which include credit card, prepaid parking card, SMS and coins.
Other features include charging high parking fee in the central business district and lowest in outer zone, besides increasing parking fee if the parking occupancy is more than 75 per cent in the parking lot.
