Metro rail now has rescue vehicle imported from Germany

Chennai:
After the arrival of first first four-rake metro train from Brazil, the Rs 198 crore state-of-the art depot in Koyambedu recieved a new visitor from Germany a week ago.

Metro Rail officials told Express that Koyambedu depot now has a Road cum Relief and Rescue Vehicle imported from Germany.

This rescue vehicle arrived in Chennai a week ago and will be used in the rescue operations. The beautiful part is that it can be used in road as well as track. This self-propelled (Diesel-Driven) vehicle will be used to transport workmen and material to the required work place.

"This would also help during an emergency when the metro train derails," the spokesman said.

It is also capable of running on 1435 mm Standard gauge (SG) and on road. This vehicle is completely customized for operating in the Chennai Metro Rail network as well as on road. It carries re-railing equipment and also has diesel engine of adequate capacity as power source, the spokesman said.

Interestingly, the arrival of the rescue vehicle comes in the wake of 700 horse power diesel locomotive being imported from the United States. When there is a power failure in the metro rail grid or any such eventualities, the locomotive could be used to pull out the rakes stranded in the tunnel or in the elevated stretch
