TN prepares blueprint to woo $10bn investment in aerospace parks in state

Chennai:

Tamil Nadu is preparing a blueprint along with Confederation of Indian
Industries to woo $10 billion investment in aerospace sector by
offering sops and special incentive packages.

It is learnt that the draft of the Tamil Nadu Aerospace and Defence
Industrial Policy 2015 has been completed and is awaiting the nod of
the state government.

The policy will focus on positioning Tamil Nadu as an emerging hub for
aerospace industry in the area of manufacturing, engineering and
design and allied activities by harnessing its industrial base in the
state.

The plan is to create an eco-system for aerospace sector development
covering design, engineering and manufacturing of aircraft for civil
and defence sector.

The aim is to attract $5 billion investments in five year period and
$10 billion in the next 10 year. The objective is to tap the state’s
inherent strengths in automotive manufacturing sector by providing all
support required by the sector into exploring opportunities in
aerospace and defence manufacturing.

The idea is also to develop aerospace clusters through public and
participation besides providing a special incentive package of
assistance and equity participation in the aerospace parks or
clusters.

Interestingly, while the aerospace park in Sriperumbudur has already
attracted huge investments, the government is planning to replicate
the model in different locations of the state.

Sources said the plan is to adopt a cluster development approach in
building the aerospace and defence manufacturing eco system. “We are
focussing on larger and smaller aerospace companies in the area of
forging, casting and fabrication facilities, metal or composite
manufacturing facilities, design or engineering services, assembly
facilities and maintenance facilities,” the source added.

It is learnt that the government would create special infrastructure
facilities in the areas which will have the aerospace industry or
parks.

“The designated aerospace park would get need based relaxation of
floor space index besides steps would be taken to promote housing
development near aerospace parks or clusters,” sources added.

“We will also develop a masterplan for the development of the area
around the cities or clusters which include roads, flyovers, car
parks, bus stops and terminals.

Interestingly, huge investments in developing aerospace parks will put
huge pressure on the state to fulfill the power needs of this
industry.

It is learnt that government will estimate the increased demand for
power due to increased investments in aerospace industry in the state
and make arrangements to meet the same.

Advantage TN:

-- TN plans to attract $5bn investmets in aerospace and defence
manufacturing in next five years

--- To woo foreign investment by focussing on cheap labour

-- US and Europe workforce is getting old which make the young
workforce in India lucrative

-- OEMs and Tier I cos which source 70 pc of their system from US and
Europe are keen to de-risk and diversify sourcing base by developing
suppliers in Asian region

--- Creating global workforce by setting up Centre for Excellence
