Chennai Central to be modelled on the lines of New York’s Times Square.

One of Chennai’s busiest hubs, Chennai Central is set to be modelled on the lines of New York’s Times Square.

Catering to 500,000 pedestrians per day, Chennai Central links one MRTS, two Chennai Metro rail corridors and three suburban trains besides the long distance trains.

Sources said that Chennai Metropolitan Development Authority and Metro Rail has prepared a blueprint to develop Chennai Central into Central Square on the lines similar to Times Square.

A Metro rail official told Express that plans are to develop walkways along the Buckingham Canal besides creating four subways which would be 40 metres wide.

The Four subways would be constructed above the roof of Chennai Metro and will be four metre underground.

“This would ease the congestion on this busy stretch as any day around five lakh people cross the road to reach Chennai Central,” said the Metro Rail source.

“We have put forth a Rs 400 crore proposal to the state government and are awaiting its nod. This square will extend from Rippon Building to Southern Railway,” said the official.

Interestingly, the project is likely to be funded by Chennai Metropolitan Development Authority.

The prime focus would be the area where the Buhari Hotel was once located. “We are converting this into two Bus Terminus. “One will have a terminus for Omni Bus and another for the regular bus. We will also be constructing a three level underground parking below the terminus. This will cater to more than 1,000 vehicles besides two-wheelers,” said the source. 

To a query on whether it is modelled as per New York’s historic Times Square, the metro rail official said that while ideas may have been borrowed from Times Square in New York but then we are constructing the Central Square as per our requirement.

Chennai Metro rail is also preparing to have a view point on the Central Square. “This won’t be that high as 200 metres. The structure will be of normal height but it will be a added attraction. It will have eateries and will cater to commuters,” said the official.

Interestingly, plans are also on to cover the Buckingham Canal to avoid the stench as has been done on EVR Road or to clean up the canal.
