Chennai:
The three corridors identified by Chennai Metro Rail in the Second Phase could be extended by another 12 kms as officials are planning to link Madhavaram with Old Mahabalipuram Road stretch.
Chennai Metro Rail sources said that initially the plan was to add another 76 km for metro rail operations in the second stage but now officials are contemplating to extend it to 88 km.
This would mean the earlier third corridor from Madhavaram to Lighthouse ( 17km) would now be extended all the way to Siruseri along the Old Mahabalipuram. This would 14 more kilometres making it one of the largest corridor.
Initially, the corridor was to link Madhavaram with Perambur, Ayanavaram, Purasaiwalkam, Nungambakkam High road, Gemini, Radhakrishnan Salai, Luz and Lighthouse. But now it will go till Siruseri and plans are also on to integrate it with Thiruvanmiyur MRTS station.
This could be a boon to North Chennai commuters who could have an access to the IT corridor directly.
This 41km stretch could also be one of the largest corridor of Chennai Metro Rail. The alignment is likely to cross the Adyar Creek and Adyar River and would require Coastal Regulation Zone clearance. However, it is learnt that officials are thinking various alignment to link the IT corridor with Madhavaram as Santhome High Road has large heritage structures.
It is learnt that the stretch would have partially elevated and underground sections. While officials are deliberating from where the stretch would be underground and elevated. Sources reveal various discussions are being held whether to have the stretch elevated from Adyar to Siruseri or from Thiruvanmiyur to Siruseri.
However, Metro Rail sources said that it is too early to come to conclusion as the precise proportion of elevated and underground sections particularly along Old Mahabalipuram Road would be considered at the Detailed Project report stage. Interestingly,
Sources state that the initially proposed 27km fourth corridor from Koyambedu via Saligramam to Injambakkam would also undergo changes. It is likely that the stretch could be reduced to 14km and it would extend till Nerkundram before proceeding to Light House. It would also go via T Nagar Panagal Park catering to the huge crowd that want to shop in the busy stretch thus reducing the vehicle congestion.
Interestingly, the proposed fifth corridor linking Madhavaram via Kolathur, Villivakkam, Anna Nagar west, Mogappair, Maduravoyal, Valsarawakkam, Trade Centre, OTA and Perumbakkam (33 Km) is also likely to change. It is learnt that to ensure optimal inter-modal integration, the alignment may cover Alandur and St Thomas Mount instead of OTA.
Sources say that the unit cost of construction of underground rail and eleated rail are Rs 500 crore and Rs 300 crore per kilometre.
It is learnt that while Chennai Metro plans to have all the 88km stretch underground then the cost could hover around Rs 45,000 crore. This would mean less amount of land acquisition and few legal issues. But it is to be watched which way the government would decide.
New proposed alignment:
Total length: 88km
Approximate Cost: Rs 45,000 crore
Corridor III: Madhavaram to siruseri (41km)
Corridor IV: Koyambedu to Light House (linking Nerkundram) (14km)
Corridor V: Madhavaram to Perumbakkam (33km)
Initial alignment:
Corridor III – Madhavaram - Perambur – Ayanavaram – Purasaiwalkam –Nungambakkam High road – Gemini - Radhakrishnan Salai - Luz - Lighthouse (17 Km)
Corridor IV – Koyambedu – Saligramam – Vadapalani – Kodambakkam - Panagal Park – Nandanam - Luz – Mandeveli – Adyar - Besant Nagar - Tiruvanmiyur – Kottivakkam - Injambakkam (27 Km)
Corridor V – Madhavaram – Kolathur – Villivakkam - Anna Nagar west – Mogappair – Maduravoyal – Valsarawakkam - Trade centre – OTA -
