Chennai:
Former President A P J Abdul Kalam declined a cabinet berth in Atal Bihari Vajpayee government in 1998 and it was the Brahmakumari spiritual guru who predicted that Kalam would become a President, according to Kalam’s close associate for nearly 45 years and noted scientist Sivathanu Pillai.
Speaking during an event organised at Russian Centre of Science and Culture to pay tributes to People’s President, Pillai, also known as father of ‘BrahMos’ cruise missile, revealed that Pokaharan nuclear test was planned in 1995 as then Prime Minister P V Narasimha Rao wanted it conducted a prior to elections.
However, with new economic policy being introduced in 1991, it was a difficult task and the US satellites found out about India’s plan, said Pillai.
However, Rao wanted India to test the nuclear weapon that he approached Prime Minuster elect Atal Bihari Vajpayee before leaving office to conduct the test once Vajpayee assumes office.
Vajpayee assured Rao that he will conduct the Pokharan test but he could not do it as he lost by one vote in the next 13 days. While both then prime ministers Indra Kumar Gujral and H D Deve Gowda were not keen for nuclear tests, it was Vajapayee again who initiated it.
“Once assuming office Vajpayee summoned Kalam for breakfast meeting and offered him a cabinet post. Kalam who was a scientific advisor then had a close discussion with his friends, including Pillai. “We urged him to decline the offer. During the breakfast meeting, Kalam told Vajpayee, Do you want the nuclear test or want to give me a cabinet berth,” said Pillai while recalling the incident.
Vajpayee was for nuclear test and that is how Pokharan happened. “The test was camouflaged as a result the satellites could not detect it and this caused the Americans to sack its CIA director,” said Pillai.
Pillai also recalled the visit of Kalam to the abode of Brahmakumaris in Mount Abu. “It is believed that the soul of Baba transcends on one of the sister who makes prophecy. During the interaction, Kalam was told that he would become a great man and what wish does he seek,” said Pillai.
Kalam as usual said he wanted the nation to be rid of illiteracy and poverty. “ Interestingly, it was on February, he went to Mount Abu and it was in March, he became the President. We were surprised with the turn of events,” said Pillai.
