Families plead Centre’s intervention as Qatar’s apex court rejects mercy plea of Tamil migrants

Chennai:

The families of two Tamil workers, whose death sentence was confirmed
by the Supreme Court of Qatar on Monday, urged Chief Minister O
Panneerselvam to seek Centre’s intervention to save them from
execution.

The two workers, Perumal Chelladurai from Virudhunagar and Alagappa
Subramaniam from Selathur in Pudukottai district, were convicted for
murdering a Qatari woman. A third person, Sivakumar Arasan from Salem,
is undergoing life sentence in the case.

After the matter was highlighted, Indian embassy in Doha preferred an
appeal, while the Tamil Nadu government came forward to extend Rs 9.45
lakh as legal fees. However, the SC on Monday confirmed the death
penalty awarded to the two, said Sr Valarmathi, State coordinator of
National Domestic Workers Movement.

“Their execution sentence will commence any time and we request state
government authorities to seek intervention of Centre and save them
from death penalty,” Valarmathi said in a letter to the chief
minister.
