Airlines claim losses worth several crore due to Cyclone Vardah

Airlines estimate that they have suffered losses running to several crores due to Cyclone Vardah which disrupted operations for nearly 24 hours.

Air India spokesman P R Vijayraghavan told Express that it is difficult to quantify the losses the airlines suffered but the zeal with which most of the airlines recovered proved the competency levels of Indian airlines sector.

Thousand of passengers were stranded as flights were diverted to various airports. While many passengers in Chennai made the airport home, some airlines like Air India came to the rescue of their flight passengers.

Recalling the impact of Cyclone Vardah nearly a month after it struck Chennai, Vijayraghavan said that it was Bengaluru and Hyderabad stations of Air India which rose to the occasion.

“The first flight from Mumbai AI 570 which was hovering over the skies was diverted to Bengaluru and was followed by more flights. Hyderabad had its own share of diverted flights. These two stations rose to the occasion and managed to keep the fliers of the diverted flights comfortable for a while and waiting for further developments initially,” he said. 

Airlines have their own share of normal work and added to this the task of handling irate passengers of the diverted flights. 

“As the operations remained suspended for entire night, we arranged accommodation and food for the stranded passengers. We managed to transport them to hotels besides made arrangements to shift them back to airport,” recalled Air India spokesman. 

“For the operating departments of Air India it was an unenviable task. On the one side they had to plan the operation of flights - delayed - and on the other they should organise crew from different parts of the city out of which some are affected to a great extent,” he recalled.
