Chennai Port caters to vessel with draft of 14.6 metres

Chennai:

Chennai Port achieved a milestone when a container ship CMA CGM Bellini with a draft of 14.6 metres berthed at at Chennai Container Terminal (CCTPL).

This comes after Chennai port became the deepest port among the 12 major ports in India with a draft of 15 metres. now the port can cater to vessels with tonnage of 8,000 TEUs (twenty-foot equivalent units). 

A draft determines the minimum depth of water a ship or boat can safely navigate. Interestingly, Union Shipping Minister Nitin Gadkari has stressed the need for all major ports to go in for a 18 metre draft
