Organised smuggling of gold alongside Indo-Sri Lanka border through Tamil Nadu coast was brought to light by Directorate of Revenue Intelligence officials when they 3kg of gold worth Rs 91.98 lakh from a bus passenger at Pallavaram bus stand.
The two 24-carat gold bars concealed in a bag were seized from the passenger Mohammed Ali Jinnah on Monday based on inputs gathered from the surveillance.
During interrogation, it was found Jinnah had acted as courier for bringing smuggled gold bars for a monetary consideration. “We are also ascertaining the gamut of organised smuggling of gold alongside the Indo-Sri Lanka border as Jinnah has stated that previously also he had acted as courier for bringing such gold bars,” DRI added.
