TN reviews contingency plan as state stares at water crisis

As the rains failed to bring cheer to water managers and the release of Krishna water from Kandaleru reservoir being delayed by Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu Municipal Administartion Minister S P Velumani on Tuesday reviewed the drinking water situation across the state and chalked out contingency plan after having discussion with officials.

The drinking water scenario in 12 Municipal Corporations, 124 municipalities and 524 town panchayats were reviewed where in contingency plans were put in place by the minister after having discussions with Municipal Administration and Water Supply Secretary K Phanindra Reddy, Metro Water managing director Arun Roy and other officials.

Officials are planning to tap every available water resources to ensure the state gets quality and sustainable drinking water supply. This could mean tapping lakes and other water bodies. Plans are underway to tap the available ground water resources besides spreading awareness to conserve water among people.

The contingency plan suggested tapping of private wells as well as ensuring quality of water in public wells. The meeting also suggested to supply only treated water to parks rather than the water supplied by metro water.

Officials were also asked to initiate action against those illegally tapping drinking water in their homes using motor pumps.
